There was once a time when ext4 was where btrfs is now: How on earth would anyone use it when ext2 "just works"? Right? Right?:-)
Yes, I remember those times, and I didn't use ext4 then either! I was rather fond of Reiserfs. Linux is all about choice.
New technology comes with new features, new solutions and new ... surprises. I rarely had problems with btrfs (meaning: never lost data). I just ran once into "disk full" which made me pull my hair until I understood the issue.
FWIW, I was able to reliably and permanently damage btrfs filesystems on raid partitions exceeding 16-TB. This was a few years ago, and yes, I submitted a bug report. I didn't loose any real data, those were test scenarios. For the past couple of years I've been using ext4 on /, xfs on data partitions for production systems. Is it time for me to try btrfs again on large partitions? What are the advantages over xfs on partitions up to 210-TB?
