Can you try booting from a liveCD or a liveUSB and see if everything is fine ?
just to make you more confortable, re-installing the same OS with same version is not a big headache if / is in a different mounting point than /home :)

Hi Paulo, I tried with the OS11.4 live-cd, which does not work. It boots but at a certain moment, it hangs. Only a text underscore. I tried with a Sustestudio USB-stick, text only, OS 11.3 which works fine. I tried with an Ubuntu 10.4 stick which works fine as far as I can tell, I didn't try everything. I tried to re-install, works fine, until it does it's final start. Then it hangs on a black screen with only a graphical cursor. I'm going to try Kubuntu. The strange thing is : it worked ! I ran successfully memtest for two full passes and the third about 80%, so memory isn't an issue. Thanks for your help.
