Hello:
I have changed to smart too. You can download a smart version preconfigured for suse 10.1 from here:
ftp://ftp.gwdg.de/pub/linux/misc/suser-guru/smart/10.1 It already has the channels (sites for package repositories) and mirrors for all the important suse package sites configured (including KDE updates, packman packages and suse updates).
I downloaded it (i586 version) and ran it. When I did, I got the message, "smart not included on the medium." What gives? This is getting more and more bizzare. I am seriously considering going back to good old 10.0, and doing my updates manually. :|
I then tried to run it again, and my machine simply rebooted after I clicked on it. I felt like there should be a blue screen somewhere telling my IRQ_NOT_LESS_THAN or something like that. Look, go to this URL:
and download the 5 packages for SuSE and for your CPU (you don't need the one with 'debug' in its name).
UNISTALL the smart package which comes with SuSE itself and then install the 5 rpms. Firstly, do this
rpm -ivh *.rpm --test
and then if there are no errors (there shouldn't be) drop the "--test" from the line.
Well, unfortunately, that didn't work. I feel like I'm being subjected to purgatory for using Windows all these years. If it isn't DLL-hell, I'm now in dependency hell.
Doing the test told me I needed python (which I already supposedly have), python elemental, and a bazillion other things. Trying to load python elemental (which I found on pbone.net) I got chastized for not having a bunch of other things. (I could swear I saw ctrl3d.dll in the
Main thing, is don't give up. It all DOES work.
Cheers.
Okay, after a long delay, I finally reinstalled 10.1 on my system. I backed up what I needed and did an install from scratch. First off - the wireless is working "MUCH" better. I have KWallet running with no password, and I'm able to successfully attach automatically to my WEP network. :) I was also able to install python and elementree with smart. I've spent some time reading information about how to run smart and am stumped. I read this: http://dev-loki.blogspot.com/2006/05/how-to-install-and-use-smart-on-suse.ht... and this: http://susewiki.org/index.php?title=Smart I did smart --update and got the following: sith:/home/kai # smart update Loading cache... Updating cache... ######################################## [100%] Updating cache... ######################################## [100%] Channels have no new packages. I then tried to install the gui, based on what i'd read: sith:/home/kai # smart install smart-gui Loading cache... Updating cache... ######################################## [100%] error: 'smart-gui' matches no packages I then tried to run the gui (what the heck, eh?): sith:/home/kai # smart --gui error: Interface 'gtk' not available Ideas? Also - do I need to get rid of Zen? Do I need to uninstall it or does it run in conjunction with smart? If I run YaST, will that mess Smart up?
