I could not find a way to do an upgrade when Installing from FTP. Is this possible? It tells you in the side bar that an upgrade will take a long time etc etc, but it only actually gives you the option for new install, or boot installed system...
Peter,
To do an ftp upgrade you have to enter 'suse_upgrade' (without the quotes, of course) in the kernel options section that you see on the kernel selection screen after booting with the iso download.

That's what we needed to know. Thanks Ken. Of course there's the option of doing an apt-get dist-upgrade, but this is, although working real well, not supported by SuSE and please (!) read the docs before you begin.

OK. Does anyone know how well an upgrade from 8.0 to 8.1 will go when I have all the Suplimentary KDE packages installed (ie. newer than the ones in the upgrade) I did this previously from 7.3+supps -> and it completely hosed X and KDE and took me about 4 hours to get it fixed again (Along time for me as I can usualy fix most linux problems in 5 min or so) I am seriously considering using apt to do the dist-upgrade unless someone can tell me that the SuSE installer will handle this ok. Can one of the SuSE guys weigh in on this? has anyone sucessfully done this upgrade? I hate upgrades normally and would never do it to a server, but I just don't have time right now for a reinstall on my PC. -- Peter Nixon http://www.peternixon.net/ PGP Key: http://www.peternixon.net/public.asc
