Hi David,

Listmates,
Prior to six months ago, if a package update or install threw an error because of a mirror time-out or other malady with the mirror system, it was a rare once-a-year occurrence. Lately, I can't even do a simple update without the mirror system blowing up 20 times. Something has got to get fixed. What was a bullet-proof SuSE system of package installs and updates has become so undependable you literally have to baby-sit each and every update.
coincidentally, earlier today I replied to an older mail from you, which you may not have seen yet ("Re: What's up with the mirrors?") where I pointed out exactly what to do:
Report the problem!
Write to admin@opensuse.org (you will reach me there), or open a bugzilla ticket. If you chose the latter path, using the bugzilla product "openSUSE.org", component "Download infrastructure" will ensure that the issue directly comes to my attention.
That's ridiculous. That's unacceptable.
I'm fully with you. I fully agree that the situation is what it is, and the download client is so fragile. It wouldn't be necessary. We all can be happy when two proposals of mine will finally be implemented:
https://features.opensuse.org/305320 Show accessed mirror(s) https://features.opensuse.org/302923 handle redirection to mirrors robustly
Until then, there is no way around improvising (and suffering) in dealing with these recurring problems.
(Please vote for those features.)
((If you are on 11.1, you can already test a prototype, which is described here: http://en.opensuse.org/Libzypp/Failover It is supposed to fix *all* those plaguing issues.))
Please help me understand correctly. Is the Failover already part of the zypper that comes with opensuse 11.1?
I used to kick-off remote updates with ssh host.domain.com 'sudo zypper up -t package' without hesitation, now it looks like the system has gone back to beta status. What is up with the mirror system? If I set up automatic updates in yast to run ... 'automatically'..., I end up with logs full of errors. That never used to happen.
Is there something that can be done to fix this? Moreover, is this something that can be reported to bugzilla? Or, is this just something else that would receive the seemingly obligatory 'CLOSED INVA' response from Novell?
No matter how you look at it something has gone dramatically downhill in the past 6 months to a year that we need to elevate to the proper people so it can get fixed. Christian, Stefan other opensuse guys, what is the proper direction to approach this one? Who is responsible for making sure the mirror system works in a reliable way?
I am responsible to make it work in a reliable way. And I will happily help you (and I can virtually promise that I can). Nevertheless, you are responsible to let me know when you encounter problems, so that I can help you. Which I hope is reasonable.
Information that I'll need is the country you are located in, possibly your IP address and the date/time of failing download, possibly certain file that the failure was encountered with.
If you fell confident to do so, you can enable zypp debug log and it'll will reveal the failing mirror right away. It is done like this: $ ZYPP_MEDIA_CURL_DEBUG=1 zypper whatever
The most recent time-out calamity follows the signature. It is an update I started 7 hours ago that I am still trying to finish. For single repos, I can see just choosing a mirror and adding that as a source if, for example, the update mirrors are having problems, but I shouldn't have to do that for every repository just to be able to perform update. Let me know who to contact or where to file this so it will get the attention it needs. Thanks.
