I deleted the specified files, and edited the .xinitrc files to the specified configuration below, but to no avail. the error list is the same as it was when i hit startkde, only in a different order. if that is a problem, i can write it down, but i didn't think that it would be that important. i did double check the files to make sure the changes had stuck, and they had. could this possibly be a problem with kde4's compatibility with stb velocity 128 pci? any further suggestions would be appreciated. Move your .xinitrc to .old.xinitrc, so you can go back if you like. Create a new .xinitrc containing the lines:
kaudioserver & kfm -d & kcc -init & kbgndwm & krootwm & kpanel & kwm
Then just type "startx" like normal.
It is also a good idea to remove your old .kderc, .kde directory, and Desktop directory. Kde doesn't seem to like residue from old installs. I do not use kde, but I have been installing it since beta2 because I like the file manager and some of the games, and it has always displayed bad behaviour when I tried to upgrade over an old install. If I removed all traces of kde then installed the new version everything worked fine. Good luck.

All,
I don't know if this is the proper list, but here goes. I am trying to install kde beta4, and i installed all of the rpm's and the qt 1.33 rpm, but i cannot get it to work correctly (i did install them in the correct order). when i enter startx, it loads fvwm95 (or fvwm2, i forget which), and when i hit the button for other windows managers, it doesn't show kde4 like it did for kde 1 (which i uninstalled). when i type startkde, i am given the following:
kcontrol: cannot connect to X server kwm: cannot connect to X server kbgndwm: cannot connect to X server Using old audio server with talk id 1
kfm: cannot connect to X server krootwm: cannot connect to X server kwm: cannot connect to X server kpanel: cannot connect to X server
I would appreciate any help that anyone could give.
