In 7.0 I used sax and xfree3.x to get windowmanager to run, but now in 8.1 I can no longer get it to work. I have tried different settings during installation but none worked. Then I tried to manually adjust the /etc/X11/XF86Config file manually, but that didn't work either. Then I tried xf86config, and still, nothing. When the X display comes up, it is there, but all screwy and I can't see anything on the screen. I know my settings from 7.0, but it won't take them. Please help.

I have tried 640x480 at 8-bit, and 16-bit. It installed completely with Yast2 installation screens, so it should work, maybe if anyone knows the Yast2 settings during installation I could use them?
During install in 7.0 I had chosen LCD 800x600@60Hz to get it to work, but this won't do it anymore. I remember I had the same problems with 7.0 when I tried to use XFree4.x (which is why I had used 3.x). I thought that XFree4.x had a bug, as it was an immature version, still.
Is my only option to downgrade to XFree 3.x? Thats seems ridiculous. Any advise?
According to man trident: ISA/VLBus 8900C, 8900D, 9000, 9200CXr, Cyber9320, 9400CXi, 9440AGi These cards have been ported but need furthur testing and may not work. [snip] So you may need to downgrade -- what modeline are you using? For my Trident 8900C I use: Modeline "640x480" 25.175 640 664 760 800 480 491 493 525
