Recently somebody on Linux mailing list described his server having 256 MB and 1 GB single swap partitions. Does it mean that modern Linux kernels can handle a single swap partition of these sizes and the book gets a little bit outdated? Could somebody clarify me these issues.
The book is and isn't outdated. If you're using the 2.0.36 kernel that still comes with the SuSE distribution as an option, you can only use multiple 128MB swap partitions. If you're using the 2.2.x kernels, you can have a swap partition as large as you want. Generally, the way I have my swap partition size is twice the physical memory (i.e., my system has 128MB RAM, so my swap size is 256MB), and I have a swap partition on each hard drive. Do you need all this space for a swap partition? Probably not. Depending on what you're doing, and how much hard drive space you need, a single 128MB swap partition might be all that you need.
