Please do not cc me when you post to the list, the double message is annoying. On 19/09/17 12:20 AM, Doug wrote:
I'm not sure what you are suggesting as a universal file system.
it's not about 'universal' any more than BtrFS should be universal or ext4FS should be universal. its about loosing options.
You are of course aware that Reiser is in prison, probably for the rest of his life, and not supporting the FS he devised, and I haven't heard that anyone else is, unless you are.
Yes I am aware he is imprisoned for the murder of his wife. But while he was the lead it was the organization he founded and the developers there that wrote and supported the FS. It was not a one-man-band. If you are unaware of the amount of development work that has been done on both the original ReiserFS and on the -4 since then I'm disappointed.
From your post, I do not see a recommendation for a "file system that fits all." (It would be nice if it worked not only for Linux but for FreeBSD. so that exchanging files between systems would be easy, and hardware --hard drives-- would work together.)
I don't know why you harp on the idea of one to fit all as opposed to increasing the number of options. We have a number of FS for SSDs, for example, not just a single one. I'm not sure just how much the idea of a OS independent FS at the hard drive level , this swapping between machines etc goes. There are Linux and BSD drivers for many file systems, enough to facilitate swaps. Heck, if I had reliable hardware I could read some of the DECtapes I have of UNIX V7 stuff, as well as the old 5" CP/M stuff. As it is, I do have a reader that plus in to the parallel port that lets me read/write iOmega PC100 "zip" disks under Linux just dandy. Those date back to 1994. Microsoft has tried for the "universal FS', licensing its FAT to everyone so it appears on the chips in my camera and phone, but I can read that on Linux too. Linux is about multiplicity of choice. ReiserFS isn't hard coded into the distributed kernel, its a module. There is no reason why it should not remain available as a module for the kernel in Leap 15. -- A: Yes. > Q: Are you sure? >> A: Because it reverses the logical flow of conversation. >>> Q: Why is top posting frowned upon? -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org
