X fails to start up in 11.0 and 11.2. According to the log it's because the siliconmotion driver, selected by SAX, is trying to create a 1024x1024x24 display instead of the 1024x768x24 display I selected. The latter size works in version before 11.x and also in 11.1. There is not enough memory to run the former display and that cannot be changed.
There seems to be no way to change this behaviour, according to the docs I have found. (Docs seem not to have changed in a long while.)
Is there a way to force X to use the display size /I/ want instead of whatever the 7734 it wants?
The differences between X versions in 11.0 & 11.2 are massive. With the big 3 drivers (ATI, Intel, NVidia) in 11.2 'Option "PreferredMode" "1024x768"' should be enough do it. For those same chips, the methodology for 11.0 should be the same as for 10.x. Maybe you ought to try the vesa driver. It seems incapable of anything other than 800x600 or 1024x768 on anything I try it on. If you're trying to use it with a current (2.6.34+) kernel, the rules are different still (due to kernel modesetting), and a moving target. You should share the xorg.conf from whatever _does_ work for you, and the Xorg.0.log and xorg.conf (if any) for what doesn't, and 'hwinfo --gfxcard' output, to get more useful help. -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive."
