Hi all!
I'm trying to install the UseNext software, but I am getting this error:
linux-4qfd:/home/warthog/Downloads # rpm -Uvh usenext_5.27.rpm error: Failed dependencies: mono(gdk-sharp) = 2.10.0.0 is needed by usenext-5.27-1.i386 mono(glib-sharp) = 2.10.0.0 is needed by usenext-5.27-1.i386 mono(gtk-sharp) = 2.10.0.0 is needed by usenext-5.27-1.i386
I have installed the SuSE 12.1 versions of these but they are the 2.12 version. Could this be a problem? If so, how do I fix it?
First of all thanks for your reply, didn't work but that's ok I'll keep at it. See below for more.
Is this the custom software for the UseNext Usenet provider?
Yes, this is UseNext's main software. The big problem is that everyone in the software / Tech office is a windows user and really does not understand Linux. I think that they just pass on the Linux version from the programmers without even checking it.
If yes, then... well.. UseNext has a pretty bad customer service reputation... to say the least.
I worked customer service at UseNext in 2011. I looked at all (that I could find) the problems customers were having with UseNext. I could not find much recorded after 2009. Also almost all were about billing. Americans could not (would not?) understand that you had to cancel the contract, not just stop paying. I was always getting calls from people asking why money was taken out of their account. Here's a hint to everybody for these type of services, always use a credit card, not a bank transfer, not a debit card, not PayPal, nothing else. With a credit card you can do a charge back, ie tell the card company to give you the money back. You can't do this with the other payments. When you do this, the credit card company will take back the money from UseNext and charge UseNext a % of the money, at least 25$ (or €) plus give a black mark against the company. At some point with too many black marks the credit card company will cut off a company. SO when you have a problem, they will almost always give you your money back. In fact I was told if the CC bill was less than 45 days old I could give it back without asking the boss. Older than that the boss had to do the paperwork.
For a news reader, you've got so many excellent choices that do NOT use Mono. I really recommend KWooty as an NZB download manager in combination with an NZB search engine such as nzbindex.nl For a basic news reader, look at Pan - included with openSUSE.
I had forgot about Pan I'll look at it.
For a news provider, look into one like EasyNews (I've used their services off and on for as many years as I can remember) who have a very good reputation.
One reason I stay with UseNext is that when I call about something, I can say tell "name here" to fix the !"§$% problem. Also knowing that the office is in Regensburg, not Munich like they tell people means that I can go to the office and talk to them.
Installing software - and I don't know if it'll sort things out in this case - use zypper install (or the short form zypper in) instead of rpm -Uvh. Zypper will sort out your dependencies for you where rpm will just error out. So in this case, you'd type:
zypper in usenext_5.27.rpm
This didn't work the dependencies just are not going to work. :(
I'm not going to test it on my system though, because personally, due to their reputation, I won't go near UseNext as a newsgroup provider.
From what I read when I did a quick search on the issues around this reader it appears to be locked into an old version of Mono... I've seen no solution (other than maybe finding a way to install the old Mono), and lots of people with the exact same error.
Looks the same to me, durn it! Oh well, I have the Windows version working on my netbook, so at least I'm not dead in the water.
So... unless you need the UseNext custom client for something specific... why not try Pan or some other newsreader you've already got access to in the openSUSE repos?
C.
Thanks! JIM PS I think that I'll call UseNext and see if they know of this problem. -- Check out my stamp & postcard collection! Yankee GO HOME!
