The Sansa E200 series, of which the largest just released is 8gb, is getting very popular as an alternative to iPod. It is also known as Linux-friendly, but some tweaking is necessary. I'm sure it would, and I'm sure it would be very appreciated by everyone. This is the whole idea behind having a wiki: you don't need to wait for someone official to do it for you. You can just add an article yourself. Just go to opensuse.org.
