In the window it shows the right certificate based on the email address with a key with question-mark icon. When I click on it, nothing really happens except that the key with question-mark becomes a key with a red X. No error message, no info, no nothing. Kleopatra didn't/doesn't complain about the cert now/when I imported it. Again, the same cert works flawlessly for the same email address in Thunderbird.
Assuming the certificates are still valid in terms of date etc. you have to set the trust level to unconditional before kmail accepts it. AFAIR this has always been the case. There is even a bug report about it somewhere that trusting a certificate should not be necessary to encrypt email. It seems to make sense though, at least for ones own cert.
