I solved the problem: I also "backed up" the mysqld.pid, which caused that the new started server did not listen to any connection. Removing the file and restarting mysql solved the problem. bye Ronald Ronald Wiplinger wrote:

I copied from the old installation the tree /var/lib/mysql to the new system. What have I forgotten to copy as well, and in case I don't have it how can I fix it. I used for the backup tar -cvzf var.lib.tar.gz /var/lib
