I realise it is SuSE policy to not clean these directories,
That policy really has to go. Seriously, how could you expect a server to operate unattended with that kind of policy in place? This default policy is just ludicrous.
I've put most of my /tmp file duration at 2 days. I've found there is just nothing that I will use after 2 days.

The ksocket dir is in use. The ssh dirs are in use; the ssh-agent socket is there. (One of them is more than a year old and still works, just FTR.) The VMware dir is in use. Actually, gpg*, gsrv*, and hsperf* might also been in use, haven't checked them. Please don't expect that your use case is representative of all openSUSE users. If you can delete all files older than 2 days, fine for you. (Do you restart your openSUSE system each day?) I have a different situation. I need lots of files and dirs in /tmp that are older than 2 days, and need to retain them. I don't need them across reboots -- then /tmp is cleared, but look at the uptime cited above: it's not as easy as you want to make it sound.
