I just would like to say from everything that I have read I wish a few months ago that I had started on Python instead of Perl in some cases.. BUT I have also found it very appealing that there are so many people working with perl that it has helped me a ton being able to readily find people willing to help answer questions I have run into as I go. If you can read from source books well and learn.. unlike myself I need interaction to learn best.. then go with Python. I, ont he other hand need to ask questions to learn.. and books and literature do not work well with me.. as well as I would like (then again this has been hindering my education in linux :) man pages are horrible source ... to me.)
Also I would like to point out it is excellent to see the scripter of this list have as bad typing skills as I do. funny as hell how the majority of programmers have crap typing skills.
