Since you seem to be talking about the mouse cursor, it will go blank in a a shell window this is normal. If you go through the setting in KDE you can change various settings for the mouse cursor and also what its focus should do.
Often, but not always, a little search box widget pops up at the top of the window. I'm using KDE, but with some gnome programs like evolution. That little popup search widget looks like something associated with gnome. But again, that does not happen every time.
