c) booting with splash into console There must be a way to configure that "by hand", but I only now the "yast-way" (yast2 might be similar) - start yast (either in KDE or on the console by typing yast) - chose "administer the system" (point 5 right above 'show readme') - sorry, but I've only the german version and I don't know how it's called in the english version) - chose "Login-Configuration" - point 4) - chose "Login-Shell" (?) - first point and change from graphical to ascii - leave the rest untouched and save the new conf by chosing "continue" - 'ESC' (2x) end yast and the system will be reconfigured at runtime :-)
d) booting without splash into console combine points b+c
If I do that, after it boots, & I'm sitting at the linux login, how do I get into KDE?
If you have the suse-default configuration just type: 'startx'

booting into console: change 5 into 3 in the following line in /etc/inittab id:5:initdefault: runlevels are defined as: * 0 System halt * S Single user mode; * 1 Single user mode * 2 Multi User without network * 3 Multi User with network * 4 Not used * 5 Multi User with network and xdm * 6 System reboot don't change the value to 6 (if you do, you're screwed) Maarten
