SuSE 10.0 not responding to "shutdown-r now"

What could be the reason for Linux not executing a shutdown -r now triggered by root user? I updated via YOU my SuSE 10.0 (open suse distro), everything went fine, after that, since the kernel was updated, I proceeded to run shudown, the usual message appears but nothing happens.
