The above is absolutely needed if you use two factor authentication on Google Gmail. It is also needed if you you want bi-directional syncing of calendar changes.
Funny thing. I used to use the provider, until I found the way I provided that doesn't need it.
Are you sure you have the ability to use bi-directional updates? I was able to see my google calendar (read only) fine using the old CalDAV interface but I could not update it.
