Need to confirm XF86Config changes

      Ed, thanks for getting back so quickly.  Good to hear that something on my system is finally beginning to look similar to others, even if it is an error message.  :-)
I read the excerpts from your XF86Config file and I'm still not completely sure what I have to comment-in, or edit.  I have copied the relevant section of my XF86Config file 
below.  You'll see that my "Screen" inputs are designated "Screen 1" in the config file.  I'm not sure how to add the comment-- "Screen1" to the "ServerLayout" section.

Michael, you are indeed getting close.  I have an ATI Xpert2000 with the

Rage128 chip.  My /var/log/XFree86.0.log is almost the same as yours down to the
...
error.

I think that you can manually add some information to the configuration file
...
and be up and running.

Look in /etc/X11/XF86Config and see it you have a section like this:
