I have a ThinkPad E520. With the 12.1 RC1 Live CD, KNetworkManager won't even enable WiFi. On the installed version, KNetworkManager isn't even available.
You should be using the "Network Management" plasmoid. knetworkmanager is gone. Regarding the WiFi device itself I think relevant firmware is missing and we are working on including them in the installation.
