That solved all of the problems .. The dialer! who would have thought!
I do not use a modem. But IIRC I read about the problem in opensuse-factory some time ago. ;)
I wish I didn't have to but I live out in the country. I did actually notice the 600 permissions on the /dev/null/ and I changed them but they got changed back again, I just hadn't worked out it was wvdial doing the mischief. This upgrade has been a little more problematic than in the past but no problems now
