The best modem I have seen that runs great with linux and win98 is the

I have never heard that before. I am not sure off hand how much power a modem draws (i.e. how much heat it releases) but something tells me it is not as much as say a video card or a hard drive. If you are worried, you might get a better cooling fan. An internel modem and a fan costs less than an external modem. The best reason to get an external modem is because there is no such thing as an external winmodem. You have to be careful when buying a modem for linux.
