This is my experience with SuSE 8.1. I like it... Some problems I was able to resolve (see the solutions if you have the same problems), with the others maybe you could help. Thanks, Dan. Problem 1: The KLaptop, apm, apmd didn't work. They said: No APM support in kernel. Reading the output of dmesg, I saw the apm was disabled by ACPI "APM: overridden by ACPI" Solution: modified /etc/grub/menu.lst and added acpi=off to the kernel parameters After thought: Is ACPI beter than APM? Problem 2: In the boot sequence it displays: Trying to move old root to /initrd ...failed Solution: mkdir /initrd Problem 3: In the boot sequence, it displays the sound driver as being ymfpci. Then Restoring the previous sound setting and after it displays some "garbage". 65 sbiload blah blah Identified the culprit: /etc/alsa.d/ymfpci called maybe by alsactl called by /etc/rc.d/alsasound Solution: Commented out the echo lines in /etc/alsa.d/ymfpci After thought: /etc/alsa.d/ymfpci did nothing more than display two lines of text. Maybe the second line instead of "echo sbiload blah blah" was intended to be "sbiload blah blah"? Yes, let's set it this way. Problem 4: not able to ifdown the eth0-pcmcia interface at shutdown. Error message is: eth0-pcmcia ifdown: Could not get a valid interface name<--skipped Solution? The shutdown order is: PCMCIA, hotplug, network. At the time the network service tries to shutdown the interface it is already gone Status: Open Problem 5: hdc is a Teac CD-224E-B CD-ROM. Message obtained by typing dmesg (a selection): Oct 3 14:37:23 linux kernel: hdc: bad special flag: 0x03 Oct 3 14:37:23 linux kernel: ide-floppy driver 0.99.newide Oct 3 14:37:23 linux kernel: hdc: no flushcache support Oct 3 14:37:23 linux kernel: hdc: ATAPI 24X CD-ROM drive, 128kB Cache Oct 3 14:37:23 linux kernel: Uniform CD-ROM driver Revision: 3.12 Oct 3 14:37:23 linux kernel: hdc: packet command error: status=0x51 { DriveReady SeekComplete Error } Oct 3 14:37:23 linux kernel: hdc: packet command error: error=0x54 Oct 3 14:37:23 linux kernel: ATAPI device hdc: Oct 3 14:37:23 linux kernel: Error: Illegal request -- (Sense key=0x05) Oct 3 14:37:23 linux kernel: Invalid field in command packet -- (asc=0x24, ascq=0x00) Oct 3 14:37:23 linux kernel: The failed "Start/Stop Unit" packet command was: Oct 3 14:37:23 linux kernel: "1b 00 00 00 03 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 " Oct 3 14:37:23 linux kernel: cdrom: open failed. But it works... Strange... No explanation Problem 6: LVM is enabled by default. Useless, because I don't use LVM. But it keeps creating /etc/lvmtab and lvmtab.d It was set as a service to start in B (boot). I disabled it. Problem 7: Messages obtained by typing dmesg (a selection): SCSI subsystem driver Revision: 1.00 kmod: failed to exec /sbin/modprobe -s -k scsi_hostadapter, errno = 2 I don't have scsi, maybe the scsi is compiled in kernel. But then, why modprobe? Is it a module? If then, how do I disable the probing of it? Change 8: I modified the /etc/X11/XF86Config file: in the monitor section I added DisplaySize line (to change the dpi) and in font path I swapped 75 and 100 dpi lines. Change 9: Added option Emulate3Buttons true into /etc/X11/XF86Config because I don't have a wheel mouse, I have an Accupoint II : two big buttons (1-left, 2-right) and two small ones (4-scroll up, 5-scroll down). There is not wheel to press on as a middle button. After the option was added, I could emulate the third button by pressing 1 and two together. That's it. some raw output of my brain. Please help with the open problems... Cheers, Dan. -- Binaries might die, but source code lives forever
