You should look at a site, MythTV, it's a program that is intended to turn your PC into a all-round vcr.
MythTV is quick way to put yourself in a world of hurt. I built an rpm for it, including an init script, sysconfig file, and a SuSE specific README. While testing, I managed to get it working ok once, but it was very slow and the picture quality was really bad. It was so unreliable and crash-prone (with no error checking/reporting) that I deleted all of my work. Plus there was the obvious BS at http://www.mythtv.org/docs/mythtv-HOWTO-20.html#ss20.19 (The real fix is to add '-DPIC -fomit-frame-pointer' or just use libtool...) I couldn't release the RPM in that state, especially since I don't use it and am not interested in fixing all those bugs. I use Freevo, which is faster and more suited to "jukebox" usage. I will be releasing SuSE RPMs for 1.4.0 when it's released soon. (I have a prerelease RPM now, but I haven't completed the integration, yet)
They've got solutions to using LIRC to have your remote communicate with other programs, through the X Test protocol (a program called xte will do this, but there's another program even better I've heard. I use PC Remote, which has a builtin mouse, but doesn't communicate through lirc.
xte is part of the xautomation package available at ftp://ftp.funktronics.ca/ pub/rpm/SuSE-8.2/i586-f/xautomation-0.92-2.i586.rpm . It's a pretty neat program. As for the Pinnacle remote, I have one and it's working perfectly.
1. Is it possible for lirc to use the remote for purposes other than just the TV card? I suspect it should be possible for a daemon to talk to applications [like my home compiled mplayer] which were compiled with lirc support.
Yes, most media programs have LIRC support built in, and xautomation lets you control non-LIRC programs. For KDE programs, dcop is pretty powerful as well. To configure for mplayer, see http://www.MPlayerHQ.hu/DOCS/en/ control.html#lirc .
2. The files provided with lirc on my Linux system seem up to date. I do seem to have a file which matches the remote/TVcard version and I am supposed to use that file as a configfile. Has anyone used this Pinnacle card before?
I should note that the remote is not in any way tied to the card. It is a separate device. My remote is on a different box than my TV card. To get that remote working under LIRC in SuSE, do the following: - - Edit '/etc/sysconfig/lirc' and set LIRCD_DRIVER="pinsys" - - Copy '/usr/share/doc/packages/lirc/remotes/pinnacle_systems/lircd.conf.pctv' to '/etc/lircd.conf' - - run 'insserv lirc' - - run 'rclirc start' At this point you should be able to run 'irw' and watch the output as you press the buttons. Each application must be configured separately to use the remote. I have the Freevo button mappings, if you're interested.
