I learned on this list that the '-p' option is used to retain permissions.
How does one make sure that _ownership_ info is preserved as well?
Just tried it, tar extracts the files automatically with the proper ownerships. If you want to be sure you can use the --same-owner option when extracting.
How does a tar archive store such info? Is it necessary to have a file, say in /etc, that tar uses that lists id numbers and ownership names?
The info is stored inside the archive. Just have a look at it with tar -tvf some_archive.tar Ciao, Stefan Btw. there is also a nice info page with far more than you've ever wanted to know about tar ;-) - To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e Check out the SuSE-FAQ at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/"><A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A">http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A</A>> and the archiv at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html"><A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A">http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A</A>>
