I am certainly not an expert. I checked with gamix and alsamixer: master, pcm and cd are open. But no sound at all.
Help plse, Karel De Vriendt
If it makes you feel better, I'm having the exact same problem. Although, I rarely listen to CD's on my computer, so it's not toooo much of an issue.

Do you have the analog sound cable connected between your CD-ROM device and sound card? Are you sure about ALL the volume settings in alsamixer? Tried ALL of them just for fun?
If there isn't an analog sound cable from the CD-ROM then you need to setup digital extraction from the CD-ROM via the IDE cable.

Thanks a lot - found the digital extraction setting in XMMS and things work great.
I hope it's correct to revive this thread, since I was following it to (try to) solve my own sound problem (no CD play in SuSE 9). In XMMS I clicked everything in sight and finally found the option to turn on "Digital extraction", as suggested Stan, above (even though I used to have the cable connecting CD drive and sound card... but hey, it's stopped working so might as well try everything else, right?). I get this error message: Device: /dev/cdrom OK Disc has 13 tracks Total length: 42:9 Digital audio extraction test failed: inappropriate ioctl for device Directory /media/cdrom OK Meanwhile, in ALSA Mixer, every setting that can be raised is raised to about 80%. Nothing. Nada. Zip. Zilch. Deathly quiet where Roy Orbison should be. I could listen in SuSE 8.2 and previous. I *do* hear sound from an mpeg file that I downloaded for test. I downloaded an MP3 (my first) and cannot hear that, though XMMS is running the timer for the playback and is showing a little spectrum display jumping and jiggling. What should I try next?
