Thanks for the step-by-step help. Hopefully, I'm getting somewhere. Had a problem though...
1) install wireless tools
Done
2) update pcmcia.rpm from ftp (you'll need it 8)
Done
3.1) fire up yast2 configure network card as pcmcia (DHCP settings might be troublesome, use hardcoded IP, just for testing at least)
YaST2 doesn't give me the option to configure the "Harris Semiconductor" (my wireless card) that it detects as PCMCIA. If I click "Configure", it goes straight to the screen where you set the IP address. I can click "Configure" where it says "Other (not detected)" and then I get the choice of a PCMCIA device. But I don't know how to hook that up to my internal wireless card. If someone could point me in the right direction here, I would really appreciate it. (Currently, the wireless is configured as eth1 and not as PCMCIA.)
3.2) disable WEP on your router for right now. You could torture yourself with it lately (WEP encoding is crap anyway)
WEP was already disabled.
3.3) go and edit bloody config 8) /etc/sysconfig/network/wireless.... stick there proper name for you SSID
Done
4) reboot (or do manual restart for all the pcmcia & stuff)
Done
after that you should be able to see your ifconfig ethX, and being able to poke with iwconfig ethX (X is whatever number you pick up for your wireless NIC.. I would suggest to put it on 0, i had some goofy experience with 1)
At this point, "# ifconfig eth1 up" says "eth1: unknown interface: No such device", even though it's configured in YaST2. Also, "# iwconfig eth1" returns "eth1 no wireless extensions.". I hope these messages help... if you need more, just let me know. I appreciate your help and hope that we can figure this out together.
