I mostly agree. There should be up-to-date man-pages available for all commands and special files. (Did you remember the fstab man-page in 6.0 SuSE?) I like being able to simply scroll up and down through the page, so I can quickly find the option I need. However, I think info can be good for when I want to sit and read, but for quick look-ups - no way. Regards Ole On Fri, 12 Feb 1999, Howard Arons wrote:

Btw. there is also a nice info page with far more than you've ever wanted to know about tar ;-)
Ah, that's just the problem :-)
<rant> Info pages are an invention of the devil, as far as I'm concerned. In the SuSE 5.2 (English) distro, the pages are strewn with distracting editorial asides ("This shouldn't be here in the final copy") and organized into painfully tortured sections connected by "pseudo- hyperlinks." If one already knows; e.g., tar, backward and forward maybe the info pages will call some vaguely-remembered option to mind, but for actually learning to use the command, forget it.
I (for one) learn linearly, so the 'man' pages were ideal. If only we weren't so web obsessed. Sigh. </rant>
OK, purists, flame away.
