I'm sitting at work here and our SA just gave me a parallel port based Zip drive. I have no experience with these things and so I have a few questions regarding their use with Linux.
1) Does it work with Linux?
Yes, it does.
2) So I have to do anything special to get my kernel to support a parallel port based drive on Linux?
You have to compile SCSI support (either into the kernel or as a module) to enable your ZIP drive. I am sure this has been explained in this list earlier and better), so you may want to check the list archive. You will have to compile something like SCSI support _and_ SCSI driver support _and_ support for parallel ZIP drive (there were three things, forgive me if I do not have the names exactly right, it's been a while since I compiled for my ZIP drive). Your ZIP drive can then be mounted on /dev/sda4 (or sdb or whatever). In older kernels (2.0.nn) you cannot have both a parallel printer and a ZIP drive compiled into the kernel at the same time. You must use modules in that case: load either the printer module or the ZIP/SCSI modules. Don't know how this is in 2.2 kernels.
Thanks,
Tony
