On those occasions that I have used Pine to look at the mail, whenever there was html involved, pine always told me to use v/s to save the file for viewing with another application:-)
You need to tell Pine what to do with it, using an entry in your /etc/mailcap file. Mine says:
text/html; /opt/netscape/netscape ; ; test=test -n "$DISPLAY"
although having said that, I agree that html has no place in email or usenet articles.
