SuSE is much more standards based, but there are still quirks in both systems. If 8.0 is your first SuSE version, it should be easier than previous SuSE versions because of the recent switch to /etc/sysconfig. By the way, XF86Config is the correct file name (the XFree project configuration file name), XF86Config-4 is a Red Hat invention so they could have XFree 3.x and 4.x installed at the same time.
