OK, its been a long time since I've set this up and I must be missing something.
This is my host file:
192.168.0.101 warthog.de warthog
But when I try to use FF to go to warthog or warthog.de it times out. When I use www.warthog.de I get some odd dating site. I checked my Apache server is up and running. So I must be missing something.
First, ping warthog to check that the IP address above is really used by your system and that the network interface is activated.
This is what I get when I do a ping: PING warthog.de (192.168.0.101) 56(84) bytes of data. ^C --- warthog.de ping statistics --- 6 packets transmitted, 0 received, 100% packet loss, time 4999ms ####### This is not right, but I'm not sure what's wrong. Ideas? Thanks! JIM
When that works, telnet warthog 80 Output should be Trying 192.168.0.101... Connected to warthog. Escape character is '^]'. Then enter GET / and the HTML code of your Apache homepage should be output on the terminal.
If that works, check the proxy configuration of FF, that it doesn't use a proxy for warthog or warthog.de. That's configured in Edit > Preferences > Advanced > Network > Settings.
That www.warthog.de doesn't work is clear, you didn't add that name in your hosts file, and warthog.de is an officially registered domain by a Swedish guy with a DNS record for that server. You saw that server's Web site then.
