I remember someone posting to the mailing list a while back about a problem with OpenOffice being really sluggish, something about a kernel conflict. I didn't think much of it at the time, as I wasn't having trouble with OpenOffice... but I've just experienced the second period of extreme lag with the program. (The first I cleared up with a reboot, but that's the Windows Way of solving problems...) Anybody remember this problem and know a solution?
There was a problem with the internal GUI code in OOo conflicting with the newer kernel schedulers, which I think SuSE include in their 2.4.2x kernel. This means that even under moderate system load, OOo works painfully slowly. http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=9277 for the gory details. The good news is that it is fixed in the new 1.1RC. Download RC2 from the Openoffice.org website. It's a lot faster starting now, looks a lot better, and has a load of nice improvements. Jason
