It has supported this forever, so long as the document actually contains text. A document that is itself just an image will never be anything more than an image unless you run some sort of OCR on it.
So other folks have informed me. And as I pointed out there, the PDFs in question have been text not images for years. I might question why image mode copy and paste is the default.
where do you find "image" mode as *default*? My okular selects a boxed area and automagically offers to save text or graphics to clipboard or a file.
