I've just upgraded the XFree86-server for the security problem and from the kdm login screen, I can't login as a user, but root is OK with either KDE or GNOME. I moved the user directory and copied the original in from a backup copy -- no good. Used YaST2 to create a new user -- still no good. I can successfully login from a terminal via "xterm -e login lancelot". From /var/log/messages when I am up as root, START NEW SESSION and try logging in on the session as user on either KDE or GNOME. The screen goes blank and throws me back into the root session.
