Why is mkinitrd even installed since the default initrd builder became dracut in 13.2? I wouldn't even be trying mkinitrd absent some instruction for a particular circumstance.
Why? Probably because mkinitrd comes in the dracut package. Maybe that is just to put a neutered mkinitrd in the way, idk.
My mistake, with interesting consequence. Before posting I ran mkinitrd --help and saw no reference to dracut. Now I ran man mkinitrd, and it's clearly become a compat wrapper to call dracut. It's 12306 bytes in 42.1, down from 15715 in 13.1, more surprises, as I expected both would be binaries, not scripts. -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive."
