Stephan, Since your not getting an answer here may I suggest that you write one of the kmix developers listed at the top of the man page your question. This doesn't always work: on my laptop i ONCE muted the volume and logged out with audio muted. Now KDE *always* starts with volume muted and the audio level set to approx 50% (whatever it was when i muted it that time), no matter how many times i unmute it and exit KDE with it unmuted. The only good thing about this is that the KDE startup sound doesn't play (it's muted) when KDE starts up. Other than that, it's just annoying.
