Try reducing the MTU of the interface that connects directly to your DSL modem.
OK, via YaST Network settings I've dropped the MTU from 1500 (default) to 1492 (next down in the list).
Easy enough to drop it until this problem goes away. What kind of thing would/could have changed though to introduce this annoyance? I've never before had to tinker with the MTU values. Is there something the ISP could/can do to "cause" this?

ADSL generally uses PPP over ethernet. Ethernet limits packet size to 1500 bytes and PPP has a header, which uses some of those bytes and reduces what's available for traffic.
