Which gets back to my original question ... And of course the general cure to Linux performance issues: throw more memory at it!
Sadly there is a lower limit with laptops and netbooks than with desktops and servers.
Right, and ssd storage is cheaper than RAM sticks. Mind you, I bought two new Toshiba laptops about a month ago. 3Gb memory.
My Compaq X6000 of 2005 vintage has 2Gb I see laptops with 6Gb or even 8Gb if you're willing to pay, http://reviews.cnet.com/laptop-reviews/?filter=500053_15242097_ but laptops are closed boxes with a very, very limited hardware upgrade path compared to the open chassis of desktops. I can throw 16Gb at the old "desktop class" machine under my desk (but wonder why a mailhub would need that); there are plenty of motherboards that support 128Gb or 256Gb. Just not for laptops :-( -- Never tell people how to do things.
