Figured it out -- I just changed the partition type to 4 (FAT16 <32M) booted the diagnostic partition using grub, flashed the bios, rebooted Linux and changed the partition type back to a0 (IBM Thinkpad hibernation) -- flash worked perfectly. Sorry for the waste of bandwidth (but if somebody knows a better (cleaner, easier, more documented, etc.) way I would love to hear it.)
