It was a blueish color I recall in kde-2.2.1 but in kde-2.2.2 it's the ugly yellowish color that XDM uses. I can't seem to recall which file and setting controlled that in KDE so that I can change it back.
The file is /opt/kde2/share/config/kdm/kdmrc. It can be easily configured in the Control Center -> System -> Login Manager. PCHintz
