I have one case where attachments are extremely valuable and quite pertinent to the aims of this list. I'm running Netscape Messenger, which doesn't support cut-and-paste to or from any X windows other than its own. If I want to include a sequence of shell output in a posted message, I do it by saving that output to a file (easy to do in Emacs, say) and then attaching the file to the message. The attachment is pure text, of course. It would be better, I'd think, to limit the size of messages than to ban attachments.
