My system is running 9.3 and I am quit happy with the setup. It is running on a P II with 400MHz and memory of 256MB. KDE is not the fastest but neither am I ;-). Due to my age and the behavior of my monitor I am using a 800x600 screen with 88 Hz refresh rate. On the right sight of all 4 desktops I have gkrellm running. Out of the blue moon the cpu usage is sometimes as high as 99 to 100%. Looking into the htop I found what is using up to 82% of the cpu. But sorry, I have no idea how to tame this wild user. Htop says:
/usr/X11R6/bin/X -br -nolisten tcp:0 vt7 -auth /var/lib/xdm/authdir/authfiles /A:0 -FtNPUe
and that uses up to 82% of the cpu at times. It than even drops to 6.4%. Memory usage is a stable 7.7%. This process seems to run for some time if I read the htop info right. In red it states 34h in black 17:45. My system is for the moment up 4 days and 8:09 Have some blackouts and my UPS is not 100% anymore ;-(. Could somebody point me out where to find the info in order to optimize my system?
First off, make sure you have applied all the updates using yast online update. From the patch file xorg-x11-libs-52303: Longdescription.english: Fix font display problems showing up with internationalized applications using legacy toolkits like gtk1, Athena Widgets, etc., e.g. xmms. This happened when using languages like Czech, Russian, Greek and others. Depending on which fonts are installed the previous update could result in 100% CPU usage by the Xserver when starting such applications. This is fixed now. Hsilgne.noitpircsedgnol: [end quote] After doing that, you might consider switching your window manager to something which is more efficient like fvwm2 (my favorite and very, very fast and exceptionally powerful when configured correctly.)
