Hi,
Has anyone succeeded installing the 2.4.12 kernel with SuSE 7.1? I tried yesterday, but when I rebooted after compiling it, the bootup froze at 'VFS: Root fs not mounted'. There were also error messages under the modules_install referring to unresolved symbols in ide drivers.
2.4.9 installed like a breeze with no problems, so I wondered if anyone experienced the same errors as me with the 2.4.12 kernel. I have tried it some times now, both the SuSE and the Vanilla edition, with no luck yet.

I had exactly the same problem until I read the README in the ftp directory with the kernel rpms. Once the new kernel rpm is installed (I used YAST1 for this) then as root do: $> mk_initrd $> lilo This worked for me. The problem was that my root directory was on a SCSI drive and therefore the SCSI driver needs to be loaded before the root directory can be mounted. It therefore needs to be in an INITIAL RAMDISK (called initrd) created with mk_initrd. This then needs to be configured into the boot process by running lilo. Hope this helps, Mark
