I lived in Bleialf, on the Belgium border North of Bitburg aboaut 50 km. for 5 jahren. Bitte ein Bit. 1976 to 1982. Now home in Florida. Miss the Dunkel the most! Those very dark, rich beers are a meal in themselves, and good German beers are unbeatable. The third best in the world is the light beer brewed by monks over near Fulda on the top of a solitary mountain. Kroitzberg Monastery, I think. Makes me thirsty to think of it! The only close comparison in richness is homemade pumpernikel bread for the Dunkel, and medium rye for the light beers. Bodo Bauer wrote:
Hi,
it's funny to see a discussion about beer on our list, I like it...
I've been living in Germany in a area where nearly 1000 breweries (you would call them micro breweries I think..) can be found in a 100km raduis. And there is no doubt, the best beers are mbrewed in this area, in 'Franken' (or Frankonia...).
I'm living now in San Francisco for about three month and enjoy the Bay area. But there are two things I'm realy missing, good German beer (forget about Becks, or the other German brands you can get in the US...) and German food... ;^)
