I have the same card, and had the same volume issue, but the quality is OK (at least after I fixed it). :-) In 9.0, I used the binary driver from VIA's website. In 9.1, it was detected and installed fine, but then the volume issue. I use the KMix Sound Mixer applet in kicker, and hide all of the mixer controls except for volume and 'VIA DXS'. The latter seems to be some sort of pre-out that controls volume _before_ the volume control. It defaulted to off originally, which meant that with everything else on high, I could barely hear sound from my speakers. With it set at ~90%, my speakers will rock the house. HTH.
