Today my main server crashed - or should I say ceased to function correctly. I had this problem once before last year when I had had considerably less experience with Linux, and had the server running on 6.1; I ended up doing a complete re-install and setup, using 6.3. The symptoms are as follows : Windows client suddenly can not log in to or use the Samba server; Attempting to shut down the server from a console fails - the "Server going down" message appears and then nothing happens - pressing 'enter' returns you to the prompt; Attempting to kill processes individually meets with limited success - some refuse to die; I was able to manually unmount some parts of the file system - those I had assigned to separate partitions - obviously not the root partition; Rebooting the machine results in serveral messages, in particular the following : "Unable to execute /sbin/init.d/rc Unable to execute /sbin/init.d/boot No more processes in this run level" And of course nothing is available. I can access everything using the rescue system, and can mount the root partition and read it fine. Running e2fsck on the unmounted partition corrected some problems - not quite sure what. After this long description of the problem, I have two questions : 1. What could cause this problem? I have heard of Linux servers being so stable that they run for years without difficulty; 2. Can I fix it without re-installing? Thanks - I need the help!
