That's in the official spec. Ethernet was originally an experiment within Xerox. At that time, it had an 8 bit MAC. In addition to ARCnet, I used to work on one other system that had an 8 bit MAC. It was a proprietary network from Rockwell Collins, which I worked on in the Air Canada reservation system, starting in early 1978,
